Sights of Cape Girardeau: Bollinger Mill and Burfordville Covered Bridge
It is Thursday, Oct. 1 and we are finding many historical sites are on off-season hours now and generally only open Friday - Sunday. We knew that would be the case, but it is a good thing in a way, because we are seeing some lesser known places and venturing off the well-traveled tour routes.
Bollinger Mill State Historic Site
Just a note on the map triggered us to explore this area. (All you GPS-only travelers, heads up! We would not have found this place by strictly following the GSP) What a pretty spot this is! The mill is huge and full of historically correct equipment and diagrams and photo boards showing how it operated.
A very pretty wooded area is adjacent to the Mill and is perfect for a picnic and rest stop. Stretch your legs and enjoy the shade and quiet.
A part of the Bollinger Mill State Historical Site, the bridge is the oldest remaining covered bridge in Missouri.

This Historic site was another stop on the Trail of Tears. It is a lovely spot with shade and water and grain available from the mill to feed the travelers.
A Barbecue Find
As we are leaving the Mill site, right across the highway is Charlie's Smokehouse BBQ, 5156 MO-34, Burfordville, MO 63739, (573) 979-3096.
I had a pulled pork sandwich and baked beans. Both were totally delicious. Johnnie had four meaty baby back ribs, potato salad, baked beans and toast. Equally yummy.
